How to Change Your Oil | St. Albert

Here at St. Albert Honda, we have a full Service department, but understand that some people like to do a few things on their own. If you have ever been interested in doing your own car maintenance, one of the best places to start is by changing your own oil. Follow these steps to get the job done.

  1. Buy a new oil filter and oil. Check your owner’s manual to make sure you are buying the right kind and the right amount of oil. Also, get a high quality oil filter.

  2. Gather your tools. You will need a box wrench, rubber mallet, filter wrench, jack, jack stand, and a drain pan.

  3. Jack up your car. Make sure you are on a level surface and raise the front of your car. Use the jack stands to secure the jacks.

  4. Unscrew the oil plug. Place the drain pan under the oil plug and then use a box wrench to remove the plug. You may need the rubber mallet if the plug is really tight. Let all the oil drain out.

  5. Remove the filter. Unscrew the old filter using the filter wrench. Put the drain pan under it, as some oil will spill out. Put a dab of new oil on the new oil filter gasket and screw it in.

  6. Add new oil. Make sure the oil plug and new filter are securely in place. Then, use a funnel to pour in the new oil.

Once you finish adding oil, simply put everything back together and clean up! If you encounter any issues, feel free to visit us at St. Albert Honda and we’ll be sure to take care of your vehicle.
